33 Holborn, London

|Practice||Foster & Partners|
This 41,000 m2 headquarters office complex for developer Gemini Commercial Investments and occupier Sainsbury’s was completed in 2000. The building features flexible deep plan office floor plates that open up via a triangular atrium to the major civic space of Holborn Circus – a busy confluence of new and historic routes into the City of London and to Smithfield. The building mediates between the historic conservation area context of Chancery Lane and the open space of Holborn Circus through a change in architectural scale and materials; lower stone and glass facades with terraces articulated by glazed stair towers facing mid-city, giving way to an eight storey curved glass façade facing towards The City.
